Up Close & Claflin
The new James Bond. The new Hugh Grant. Sam Claflin (1986) has heard all of the comparisons. The steady actor lets the compliments slip. There are more important things in the world. Acting for him ‘a job’, but one to which he is fully committed.
Sam Claflin has starred in The Riot Club, a take on student life in Oxford, in fantasy films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Snow White and the Huntsman and The Hunger Games, but also in romantic roles such as Me Before You and Love, Rosie. For others, his career sounds like a dream – and it is – though the actor remains with both feet firmly on the ground. Last summer he was both thirty and a father, making life suddenly feel different for the young Englishman. “I feel like an adult for the first time. I’ve started a new chapter in my life and have to remind myself that I have a responsibility.”
Will you always make different types of movies?
I always try to find new challenges. Much of my work until now has been suitable for the whole family. Now I want to explore new aspects of this profession to prove that I am more than what you think you know.
What kind of movies feel most natural to you?
Hard to say. I do not think I’m an action hero but I would have liked a try. At the same time I like to get down and dirty for a role, feel the real depth of it. I feel at ease when I continually push myself. That’s what I want to do more and more.
Some people see in you the new James Bond.
I think I speak for every Englishman, and basically for every man, when I say that it would be an absolute honor to play James Bond. It’s such a great character. But I’m not putting bets on me taking on that role. It would be wonderful but I keep focusing on other things.
You studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art; What was your most valuable lesson which you learnt there?
I learned so much there. It was the most valuable three years of my life. It taught me a lot about the whole business of film, politics and everything around it. Things of which I was unaware. It also made me realize that everyone approaches this profession differently. The main lesson is: be yourself, try not to emulate anybody. You work with different actors and directors, and they all approach the subjects differently. So be comfortable with whom you work with and what you do.
You also performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company. How was that?
It is not my strongest point. With all due respect to my former teachers, Shakespeare was not very well taught to us. That’s why I cherish the little warm feelings I do have for it. It’s something which I gradually grew to love with Drama, but I’m certainly not a natural talent in Shakespearean roles. Read more »

MEET THE MAN YOU’RE ABOUT TO FALL FOR
His Hunger Games face is teen-familiar, but this year, Sam Claflin matures on screen in the long-awaited film version of bestseller Me Before You. It’s been the making of him, he tells Kate Wills. Read more »
Promoting the upcoming romantic-drama Me Before You, set for release on June 3rd (UK), Sam was interviewed by Stefan Pape from HeyUGuys about his stunning portrayal of Will Traynor. Sam sets a strong focus on understanding not just the fictional authenticity of portraying Will’s changing moods from animosity to amiability, but the real ‘eye-openers’ of his research into the different challenges and realities faced by quadriplegics in adapting to their new lives. Clearly, Me Before You has left an indelible mark on him, as it has for us and all its readers.

To say Sam Claflin’s star is rising seems woefully inadequate; rocketing would be a more appropriate term. Certainly there has been nothing steady about the actor’s career path to date. Just months out of LAMDA he was notching up parts in prestigious TV shows, chasing this up with scene stealing roles in Hollywood blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Snow White and the Huntsman. Claflin, 29, isn’t someone who’s about to rely on a megawatt smile and ‘nice guy’ reputation to keep stoking his career, however, if you’ve seen his turn in The Riot Club you’ll know he’s not afraid to do nasty. It’s all go for Hunger Games star Sam Claflin. He talks fatherhood, sweet deprivation and Jennifer Lawrence with Anna Smith.
The teenaged Sam Claflin wanted to be a footballer, but it wasn’t to be. “I broke my ankle at 16 and I was like, right. I can’t do that, I need to do something else. Then I found drama. When I put my mind to something, I stick to it. I am good at following it through”.
